District Earns Excellent Five-Star Rating on Report Card

Cuyahoga Heights Schools CHS) has earned a five-star rating from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) on the 2022-2023 Report Card.

“We clearly out-performed 2021-2022, which was the first school year in which we came out of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Assistant Superintendent Matt Young. “Our staff and the community have both done a tremendous job of supporting the district’s high expectations.”

CHS received 23 out of 25 possible stars, up from 22 stars the previous school year. The overall rating is composed of five components which themselves receive a rating of from one to five stars. These components are achievement, progress, gap closing, graduation, and early literacy. The district earned five stars in all areas, which the state defines as “significantly exceeds state standards”. In the area of early literacy, the district earned three stars, meaning it “meets state standards”. When combining the scores from all five components, the district as a whole earned a five-star rating overall and all three schools earned five stars overall as well.

CHS was among 13 districts in Cuyahoga County and 75 districts in the state to earn five stars, according to the Plain Dealer newspaper. Overall, Cuyahoga Heights ranks 29th among 607 school districts in Ohio, placing it among the top five percent of districts in the state.

Based on overall performance, Cuyahoga Heights High School ranked 32nd among all public school buildings in Ohio, placing it in the top 0.95 percent in the state.  Among high schools, it ranked 9th overall of about 820 high schools in Ohio.

Cuyahoga Heights Middle School ranked 19th overall among the 3,372 school buildings in the state, placing it in the top 0.56 percent in the state. Among all middle schools/junior high schools, it ranked 3rd overall. Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School ranked 122nd overall among all school buildings, placing it in the top 3.6 percent, and 50th overall among all elementary schools.

The district raised its score on the Performance Index to 102.478, up from 100.897 the previous year. The Performance Index is a measure of all levels of student performance on the state assessments. “The fact that the Performance Index increased again is significant, because when you are a high-achieving district, as is CHS, it’s difficult to move beyond this,” said Young. “Considering that each year the group of students taking the tests is different, the fact that we continue to improve on the Performance Index should not be taken for granted.”

“It’s very difficult to be a high-achieving district and improve on our performance each year,” acknowledged Superintendent Tom Evans. “It really says a lot about our students, staff, and families for their hard work year after year.”

Despite the district’s impressive rating, Young encouraged everyone to continue to strive toward excellence. “If we want to continue to be at the top we have to continue to evolve,” he noted. “We can’t always rely on the same exact strategy year after year. We have to be maximizing what our students are capable of doing.”
