She is Committed to District's Littlest Learners

That natural white streak in Wendy DeFranco’s hair IS NOT the result of spending 10 years working with pre-kindergartners in Kyle Manfredonia and Kelsey Healy’s classrooms. She was born with it. “My mom used to call it my angel kiss,” said DeFranco. “I have since learned that this streak is associated with hearing issues.” Though DeFranco has had ear surgery, it hasn’t prevented her from being a dedicated educational aide who is committed to helping each student reach his or her full potential.

DeFranco pays close attention to the learning needs of the district’s littlest learners. She is caring, kind, and nurturing. Her ability to be flexible enables her to handle new challenges, unexpected situations, and changes with ease and to jump right in to help no matter what is thrown her way.

“She promotes a whole-child approach and cares deeply about our students,” said Healy. “She is able to connect with each child and helps foster a safe and nurturing environment for our littlest learners. We are grateful to have her on our preschool team!”

DeFranco dutifully works behind the scenes getting the room and materials ready each day for class so that the teachers can concentrate on the work. She interacts one-on-one with the students during project time and table time. “Basically, you name it, I do it and I love every minute of it.” DeFranco exclaimed. Though she assists in teaching, DeFranco admits to learning a thing or two from the students as well. “I’ve learned that my Prekindergarten students are brutally honest and very curious. I love every conversation I have with them. I enjoy letting them question and problem solve, and I like to joke with them.”

In her spare time, DeFranco enjoys yoga, long walks and hikes with her husband Fred, and watching television. “My DVR is full of my guilty pleasure shows,” she said, including competitions, home improvement, and anything from the Bravo TV network.

DeFranco considers herself fortunate for having reached her lifelong goals. “I always wanted to be a mom and a teacher and I am both.” she noted.  She and Fred have been married 26 years and have three children, all graduates of Cuyahoga Heights High School. McKenna, 25, works in marketing in Raleigh NC; Tristan, 22, is pursuing an acting career; and Tiernan, 19, is an independent business owner developing a fitness app.
