How does playing the guitar relate to math and science? Fred Holzworth, C.E.O. of S-tek, Inc. recently made the connection via a donation of four acoustic guitars — two each to Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School and Cuyahoga Heights Middle/High School. Holzworth and his wife, Kirstin, are the parents of Jaxon Holzworth, a sixth grader at Cuyahoga Heights Middle School.

“We couldn't have music without arithmetic. How else would you count out a bar, or play in 8th or 16th rhythm over a 100 BPM percussion or drum pattern?” explained Holzworth about the relationship. “Music connects concepts from math class directly to the guitar in your hands. The complexities of music theory and mathematical principles challenge even those proficient in advanced mathematics. Those who learn an instrument naturally improve their understanding of math and science.”

Holzworth also emphasized how playing an instrument, such as the guitar, instills confidence. “Learning a chord, then two, then three, and eventually playing a full song is an amazing feeling. The confidence gained is invaluable. It opens up new opportunities for collaboration, creativity, and expression,” he noted.

Teachers Angelo Bertolone will use the elementary school’s two guitars in music classes while Grace Brown will incorporate the two guitars donated to the middle school/high school in the “History of Rock” class that she teaches.
