Cuyahoga Heights students traded their classrooms for construction equipment as they participated in SheDig 2026 at the Operating Engineers Training Center in Richfield. This marked the first year Cuyahoga Heights students attended the event, which gave them an opportunity to explore careers in the construction industry through hands-on experiences.
The visit was organized by Julie Regula, career specialist with Cuyahoga Valley Career Center (CVCC), and Cuyahoga Heights English teacher Sheila Ogden. Students that attended included Kai Lyons, Laurel Gosnell, Arianna Wittingen, Suellyn Crook, and Breanna Wichert.
Throughout the day, students learned about the career path of a heavy equipment operator while connecting with apprentices and industry professionals. They heard firsthand about the training, skills and opportunities available in the construction industry and had the chance to ask questions about pursuing careers in the field.
One of the most memorable parts of the experience was the opportunity to get behind the controls of heavy construction equipment. Students explored forklifts, dump trucks, cranes, soil compactors and other machinery, gaining a better understanding of the equipment and skills used on construction sites.
Beyond introducing students to potential careers, SheDig encouraged them to step outside their comfort zones and try something new.
Following the event, Regula shared that even if students ultimately choose careers outside the construction industry, the experience helped them build confidence and recognize their own capabilities.
For Cuyahoga Heights students, SheDig 2026 was an opportunity to discover new interests, gain practical experience and see firsthand the many career pathways available after graduation. Sometimes, discovering what's possible begins with simply being willing to give something new a try.
