Approximately 40 Cuyahoga Heights Middle and High School students came together on Thursday, April 9 for an afternoon of creativity, conversation, and connection during a fun and meaningful Inclusion "Mixer" held on the school grounds.
As a followup to Inclusion Week held in the Cuyahoga Heights Schools (CHS) March 23-26, the mixer aimed to further enhance awareness and understanding of individuals with disabilities, as well as to promote understanding and encourage everyone to feel valued and included.
“The mixer brought students of all backgrounds together in a welcoming and positive environment,” said Jena Amato, middle/high school intervention specialist. Amato and Joellen Podell, administrative assistant to the athletic/activities director, coordinated the event.
During the mixer, students tie-dyed colorful bags, pillowcases, and hand towels. Some students also brought their own items from home to personalize, adding even more individuality and excitement to the activity. Attendees enjoyed popsicles while they mingled, laughed, and built new friendships across grade levels.
“The mixer enabled students to step outside their usual social circles and engage with peers in a relaxed, supportive setting,” noted Amato. “The atmosphere was one of kindness, acceptance, and community, highlighting the importance of making everyone feel seen, valued, and included.”
Students also were invited to sign up for the Inclusion Club, which aims to continue promoting inclusion, friendship, and school-wide unity through engaging activities and events. Members can look forward to after-school meetings (dates to be announced) where they will collaborate to plan an end-of-the-year celebration.
“Overall, the Inclusion Mixer was a great success and set the tone for continued efforts to build a more connected and inclusive community at CHS,” Amato concluded.
