Winners of the "Save the Egg" competition.

Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School second- and third-grade students recently went to “egg-straordinary” measures to ensure the success of their latest science project – the annual “Save The Egg” competition.

“The goal was to build the lightest-possible container to keep a raw egg from breaking when dropped,” explained science teacher Barb Currey. In class, the students sorted themselves into teams then created a “plan” to protect their eggs. Specifically, they needed to create something that would slow the descent of the egg, a container to soften the impact, and a “seatbelt” to keep the egg from falling out of its packaging.

Using materials brought from home – cardboard paper towel and toilet tissue tubes, straws, cotton balls, popsicle sticks, string, yarn, bubble wrap, plastic bags, and tape – the teams set to work building their contraptions. Then on Friday, December 12, Principal Jeol Melvin dropped the egg containers from the school’s library window while the students cheered below. For added “egg-citement” in the challenge, second-grade students competed against third-grade students.  “It was a fun experience for all,” noted Currey.

The winning teams were as follows:

Grand Champions with a container weight of 34 grams

Second graders Rickey T. and Spencer W.

Second Place with a container weight of 34 grams:

Second graders Xander L. and Felix F.

Third place with a container weights of 38 grams:

Second graders Carson B. and Mazzy R.

Best Team Collaboration:

Third graders JJ H. and Noah D.
