Students on Capitol Hill

Nearly 60 Cuyahoga Heights Middle School (CHMS) students immersed themselves in the epic story of America on a field trip to Washington D.C. March 10-12.

Among the unforgettable experiences were visits to the city’s historic landmarks and cultural institutions. They visited Arlington National Cemetery where they spent time at the Eternal Flame marking the grave of 35th President John F. Kennedy. They also witnessed the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Other stops included the Iwo Jima World War II, Vietnam War and Korean War memorials; as well as the Martin Luther King, Jr., Jefferson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Lincoln memorials. In addition, students visited Capitol Hill, the Supreme Court building, and the American History and Holocaust Museum. On the way home, they visited Gettysburg where they toured the battlefield and the visitor center.

“The Washington D.C. trip is a timeless adventure that allows students to have an authentic educational experience,” said Nate Bryk, CHMS social studies teacher and a chaperone. “The timing of the trip – just before heading off to high school – made it all the more special because our eighth graders had incredible experiences with their friends that they will always remember.”
