Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School (CHES) has been recognized as a Governor’s Science of Reading School. This designation celebrates CHES’s commitment to providing every student with high-quality instruction aligned to the Science of Reading, a phonics-based approach to literacy founded on science-based methods.
“This is a testament to the hard work and efforts of our teachers, staff, students, and families who have worked together to help our students achieve literacy success using the Science of Reading approach,” said Principal Joel Melvin.
The Science of Reading is a top education priority for the State of Ohio and for the past few years, the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODE) has been urging districts to move to more evidence-based approaches, such as this.
“Reading is the key to school. Reading is the key to life. Through your school’s strong commitment to the Science of Reading, you are building a strong foundation for your student’s future success – not only in the classroom, but also in post-secondary education and as they enter the workforce,” said Ohio Governor Mike Dewine and Steven D. Dakin, Director of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, in a letter to Melvin announcing the award. “We applaud your school's efforts to raise literacy achievement and ensure all students have the best opportunities to become proficient readers.”
