Tom Talks | Return to Learn Phase 2 | 10/7/2020

Cuyahoga Heights Families,

As stated in past communications, my goal as Superintendent is to have our students return to our buildings 100%, receiving the outstanding instruction we have all come to expect from our staff in Cuyahoga Heights Schools. Over the course of the last several months, we have collaboratively  planned, developed and implemented a model for teaching and learning based on a multitude of factors to keep our students, families, and staff safe. Our plan has several phases (see below), and because statistics from the Ohio Department of Health continue to show favorable data trends, we are preparing to enter Phase 2.

Phase 1: 100% Remote Leaning

Phase 2: Scarlet & Gray Cohort Hybrid at 50% Capacity

Phase 3: 100% In-Person Learning

NOTE - Phases and/or steps may be added as we transition between models

Our plan for Phase 2 is to begin on Monday, October 19 in a Scarlet & Gray (A/B) Hybrid Model at 50% capacity, keeping Heights Wednesdays. With this hybrid model, we are able to socially distance in classrooms, hallways, lunches and other common areas while effectively implementing other safety protocols. Whether participating in the hybrid or remote model, our goal is for students, as closely as possible, to follow their schedules to be communicated by building principals. Please understand that plans are subject to change based on a variety of health and safety factors.

Here are some specifics to the schedule for students:

Scarlet Cohort

  • Learn at school in-person on Monday and Thursday following schedules to be communicated by building principals

  • Learn from home on Zoom on Tuesday and Friday following schedules to be communicated by building principals and taught by their CHS teachers

  • HEIGHTS Day on Wednesday from home

Gray Cohort

  • Learn at school in-person on Tuesday and Friday following schedules to be communicated by building principals

  • Learn from home on Zoom on Monday and Thursday following schedules to be communicated by building principals and taught by their CHS teachers

  • HEIGHTS Day on Wednesday from home

Remote Cohort (those families opting for their students to continue with 100% Remote)

  • Learn at home on Zoom on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday following schedules to be communicated by building principals and taught by their CHS teachers

  • HEIGHTS Day on Wednesday from home

In addition, for those families currently participating in our Off-Site Learning Center program, this service will continue to be available to you when your student is not in school. Adjustments will be made and more information is to come for these families.

Principals plan to notify families on Friday, October 9 as to which cohort students are assigned and will provide more specificity to daily schedules and procedures early next week.

In preparing for students to return, we have taken the daily journey of our students. This includes waking up in the morning, riding on a school bus to the physical school building, waiting to enter the building, entering the building, waiting inside the building in designated areas, attending adult supervised care visiting lockers, getting to class, taking into account any and all movement throughout the day (changing classes, using the restroom, lunch/cafeteria, gym/physical education, recess, etc.), leaving school and returning home. It is only by looking at the day through a student’s eyes that one can truly understand the opportunities and risks that exist for both the students and adults who create and provide the educational experience.

Click here to view an outline of our expectations of our families and students as we take this journey. As you read through these expectations, keep in mind that only 50% of the students are in the building on any given day.

Our ability to keep our students in the building and return to 100% in-person learning is largely dependent upon every person adhering to these requirements. More information will be posted on our COVID-19 page and individual school websites as it becomes available.

Go HEIGHTS!
