A Cuyahoga Heights High School student will have her Commercial Art/Graphic Design piece featured in “The Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition” April 2 - May 15 at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower, in Columbus. The show is sponsored by the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education.
Kish’s entry was one of 242 pieces selected from 1,255 submissions in the region. As an entrant, she was randomly assigned a name, age range, and gender to use to create her entry. “I interviewed my dad because he’s a member of Generation X, (the generation to which her entry was to be aimed),” said Kish.
With this information, she designed a 3D art piece using Adobe Illustrator software, an Exacto knife, rubber cement, a ‘bone’ tool, heavyweight cardstock, and a photocopy machine to create “Ornum Fragrance Package” ("ornum" is Latin for "decoration").
"I chose a snake because their patterns on their backs are like a decoration, and they’re cool! I also added the gems for an additional decorative element,” said Kish about how she designed her entry. As an entrant, Kish is eligible for a scholarship to Bowling Green State University, the college she intends to enter after graduation in May where she will study graphic design. She aspires to work in package design, where she can combine her artistic talents with branding and marketing.
“Sophia is a talented and very conscientious student that has been a pleasure to watch grow as a student and a person,” said art teacher, John Shafer. “I look forward to seeing her continue to grow post graduation from Cuyahoga Heights.”
