Bookworm Book Vending Machine Unveiled

A new vending machine has been installed at Cuyahoga Heights Primary School, but instead of dispensing candy, snacks, or drinks, it dispenses books! It’s the school’s latest resource to promote positive behavior, literacy, and an excitement to read.

“I am so excited about the addition of our Bookworm vending machine,” said CHES Principal Joy Houchen. “It is important to me that every student owns books of interest that they can read time and time again because the love of reading comes from reading what you love! I can’t wait for all of the kids to come down and select their books.”

The machine, which was ordered in the fall, was unveiled in a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Wednesday, March 16. It will be located in the elementary school main office.

The machine operates with tokens that Houchen gives students on their birthdays (summer birthdays are celebrated on their “half-birthdays”).  Students can also purchase tokens with “Rocket Bucks” – coupons they earn for demonstrating efforts to be caring, honest, engaged, and safe. Tokens may also be given for special occasions or as rewards for accomplishments.

The Bookworm, which holds up to 400 books, was purchased with proceeds from the school’s annual school-wide butter braid and cookie dough fundraiser. The school’s PTO donated the books.
