Elementary Students Take Top Spots in Math Contest

Cuyahoga Heights fourth and fifth graders were among the top performers in a math competition sponsored by the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics on February 27 at John Carroll University.

“There were more than 1,000 students competing and our teams did great,” remarked teacher Kaelyn Montgomery, Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School (CHES) guidance counselor, who accompanied the students.  “Our fourth-grade team earned champion ribbons for scoring in the top 30 percent of teams and our fifth-grade team earned trophies for scoring in the top 20% of teams.” Members of the fourth-grade team were Audrey Morway, Callan Hensley, Alaina Lawrence, and Zane McManus. Members of the fifth-grade team included Owen Petel, Todd Long, Liam Conte, and Remy Bell. (Owen is a fourth-grader who participated on the fifth-grade team.) “We are so proud of these students,” remarked CHES Principal Joy Houchen about their accomplishment.

The competition was composed of five different tests which students worked on together to complete. These included two rounds of problem solving, a nimble number line which encompassed mental math, a written problem test, and a construction test where they had to create something while following all of the directions.

Other area districts that competed included the Cleveland Heights-University Heights and South Euclid.
