Second Graders Interact Via Skype with Harvard Scientist

Second graders in Mrs. Barb Currey’s classroom participated in a unique and engaging learning experience by interacting with Harvard Scientist Kari Taylor-Burt via Skype on Thursday, October 5
th. During the interactive discussion, students learned about Mrs. Burt’s ongoing research regarding how animals move, specifically mallard ducks and the movements they use when on land, swimming and flying. Mrs. Burt also showed examples of real vertebrate (back) bones, as well as video clips of ducks conducting different movements in her laboratory. The discussion topic was relevant to the students’ current unit on animal adaptations and study of animals that live in the ocean, desert, Arctic and Antarctic environment. Mrs. Burt also took time to select and answer several questions submitted by the students beforehand. The students were thrilled to have their questions selected, and had the chance to stand up, greet and personally thank Mrs. Burt for answering his or her question. The online discussion with Mrs. Burt was made possible through a program offered by the Science Friday news segment on National Public Radio, which seeks to match participating scientists with selected classrooms across the country. In the coming months, Mrs. Currey’s classroom will rejoin Mrs. Burt with a Skype visit to her Harvard lab, where students will be able to see live animals being trained, filmed and researched, including emu, mallard ducks, grasshoppers, rats and pygmy goats.
