Safe School Environment

Our district makes every attempt to provide a safe environment for students during the school day as well as at any event held in one of the school facilities.  In accordance with this procedure, the school district may elect to use a breathalyzer, metal detector or similar device at any or all campus events when the occasion of “probable cause” is evidenced.

Music

Courses Offered, Course Description, Course Syllabus:


Band

(Year course--5 periods per week --1 credit; 3 periods per week--.6 credit)
NOTE: 3 periods per week option is for students participating in more than one musical group that meets the same period)
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

NOTE: Open to all students, beginning as well as those students who have previously trained on a band instrument. Such training may include school music lessons, private music lessons, playing in the elementary and/or junior high band. After school rehearsals are required during marching season.

AIMS: To increase musical sensitivity and understanding of each student through the use of good music and active participation in rehearsals and performances.
CONTENT: Many types of music from master works to program music.

Chorus

NOTE: 3 periods per week option is for students participating in more than one musical group that meets the same period)
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

NOTE: Open to all students. Auditions for voice placement. Some after school and evening rehearsals and performances are required.

AIMS: To provide an enjoyable singing experience for all interested students; to increase the sensitivity of each student to good music; to aid in the development of maturing voices; to foster greater skill in reading and understanding music.
CONTENT: Singing a varied selection of choral literature from all periods of music history.

Orchestra

(Year course--5 periods per week --1 credit; 3 periods per week--.6 credit)
NOTE: 3 periods per week option is for students participating in more than one musical group that meets the same period)
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

NOTE: Open to all students. Beginners can be accommodated, although the usual background involves string training in elementary and/or junior high school. Reasonable effort and out-of-school practice is required. Some after school rehearsals may be required.

AIMS: To promote greater ensemble skills and to increase development of technical capabilities through participation in rehearsals and performances; to broaden student's appreciation of various orchestral styles.
CONTENT: A wide variety of orchestral and chamber music from different periods and in various styles.

NOTE: Providing that scheduling permits, students may enroll in more than one performing group. Permission and/or auditions may be required.

Introduction to Music Technology

(Semester course--5 periods per week--.5 credit)
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of computers and approval of instructor.

AIMS: Introduction to Music Technology will involve working with computers and electronic musical instruments together with MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface).
CONTENT: Students will explore many different software titles, use the Internet to download and manipulate MIDI files from students in other schools, and learn the basics of a MIDI keyboard controller.
