Nutrition

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
AIMS: To develop an awareness of the concept of wellness and the relationship with food choices.
CONTENT: Identifying nutritional needs and the elements of wellness. Preparation of nutritional food, storage of, and serving foods and nutritional strategies to promote wellness.
Regional Foods
(One Semester course--5 periods per week--1/2 credit)
Grades 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Nutrition

AIMS: To develop an appreciation of food preparation and recipes of regional foods from the United States. Understand cuisines of the United States by planning, preparing and tasting numerous foods.
CONTENT: Plan, prepare, and serve meals by special methods and techniques of regional foods of America. Plan, prepare and appreciate the seven regional cuisines of the United States (Northeast, South, Midwest, Southwest, West Coast, Alaska, and Hawaii).
International Foods
(One Semester course--5 periods per week--1/2 credit or One year courseã 5 periods per weekã1 credit)
Grades 11, 12
Prerequisite: Nutrition or Regional Foods.

Parenting
(One Semester course--5 periods per week--1/2 credit)
Grades 10, 11, 12
AIMS: To identify and discuss the roles of parenting in our society.
CONTENT: Understanding the, responsibilities of parenting, related knowledge of developmental growth and needs of children, promotion of self-esteem and self-discipline in positive parent-child relationships.
Life Skills for the 21st Century
(One Semester courseã5 periods per weekã1/2 credit)
Grade 12
AIMS: When living on one's own, it is important that every person understands the hows and whys of a practical, successful, and fulfilling lifestyle. This course will provide ample discussion, projects, and skills regarding the basic steps toward a successful and fulfilling lifestyle.
CONTENT: To become knowledgeable and skilled regarding the needs and priorities of budgeting, credit, and insurance. Students will also become knowledgeable regarding relationships, communication, the role of technology, home maintenance, meal planning and preparation, conflict resolution and clutter versus organization.
Fashion Design and Clothing
(One Semester course--5 periods per week--1/2 credit)
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
NOTE: Meets the fine arts credit requirement at some schools.
AIMS: To study the history of clothing in regard to design and construction; to introduce flat pattern technique, commercial pattern, and develop further skills in sewing.
CONTENT: Origin and evolution of clothing; social and psychological aspects of clothing; fashion and the garment industry; construction of clothing, fitting patterns, careers in clothing design, merchandising and textiles.
