Teachers look for many indicators to determine how your child is developing and learning. The following skills are important to your child's development.
  • Personal/Social Skills
Your child should be able to select and engage in an activity for 10-16 minutes by the end of the school year with minimal adult direction. Your child should also be able to play cooperatively with other children, solve social problems using words, and participate during group times by singing, moving to music, or speaking. Other important indicators include using imaginative play and following classroom routines and rules consistently.

  • Readiness Skills
By the end of the school year your child should be able to recite the alphabet, recognize his/her name in print, recognize the eight basic colors and four basic shapes, rote count and point count to ten, and visually recognize grouped objects to three. Your child should also be able to attend during shared reading, follow 3 to- 4-step directions to complete a project, and use a computer to operate instructional software. Visual discrimination skills such as matching and visual and auditory memory skills are also stressed. Your child shouId be using symbols while playing for example, using a box as a doghouse) consistently. Alphabet and number recognition are taught and assessed throughout the year although children are not expected to identify all at the PreKindergarten level. Most children do have partial alphabet recognition and recognize most numbers 1-10 by the end of the school year.

  • Language Skills
Your child should use language for a variety of purposes including expressing needs, describing situations, interacting socially, showing knowledge, labeling objects, and expressing ideas. Your child should use complete sentences consistently and speak clearly.

  • Fine Motor Skills
Your child should develop proper writing and cutting grips. He/she should be able to write his/her name legibly, cut simple shapes and lines, stack blocks, string beads, and manage coats, backpacks, and other personal items.

  • Gross Motor Skills
Your child should walk and run smoothly and evenly, hop on each foot, jump, kick, climb playground equipment independently, and alternate feet when climbing stairs.

  • Creative Skills
Your child should begin to use creativity in play including creating artwork, dictating or writing sentences to accompany artwork, solving problems, engaging in dramatic play, and using symbols.
