Joel Melvin Named Elementary School Principal

Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School will begin the 2024-2025 school year with a new principal at its helm. At the April 24 meeting, the Board of Education appointed Joel Melvin to a two-year contract beginning August 1, 2024.

“I am very excited to be joining the great staff and students of Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School and the Cuyahoga Heights Schools,” said Melvin. “The district has such a great reputation of performing at such a high level and am very excited to get started.”

Melvin is currently principal of Hamilton Elementary School in the Elyria City School District. He began his career in education in 2009 as an intervention specialist in the Lorain City Schools. He also was an intervention specialist in the Amherst City Schools for five years. He was assistant principal for two years and in the Lorain City Schools, then moved to the Elyria City Schools where he was assistant principal for four years and principal for two years. Throughout his teaching and administrative careers, Melvin coached wrestling either as an assistant coach or head coach for the North Ridgeville, Lorain, and Elyria school districts. He also has the unique experience of having worked as a tuckpointer for a masonry restoration company which focuses on preserving the original structure of historic buildings.

Melvin has a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Educational Leadership and Administration from Ashland University, and a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Special Education and Teaching with a minor in psychology from Baldwin Wallace University. He also attended Heidelberg College where he studied secondary education and teaching, business management, and history while playing football.
